AWD vs. 4WD: What's the Difference?
All-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) systems are designed to enhance traction in challenging driving conditions such as rain, snow, ice, and bumpy roads.
AWD:
- AWD is always on and continuously adjusts the power sent to each wheel.
- AWD is typically found in cars and crossover SUVs.
- AWD systems are usually lighter and less expensive.
4WD:
- 4WD can be turned on and off as needed.
- 4WD is typically found in trucks and off-road vehicles.
- 4WD systems are usually heavier and more expensive.
What is Volkswagen 4MOTION® AWD?
With the 4MOTION® AWD system, power is distributed between front and rear axles on an infinitely variable basis by a multi-plate clutch. Normally, power is mainly transmitted to the front axle, which saves energy. However, in the event of an impending loss of traction, the rear axle is activated in a fraction of a second. This is why 4MOTION is considered to be a permanently engaged four-wheel-drive system. The distribution of power to all four wheels becomes active before wheelspin occurs. A loss of traction is therefore virtually excluded. There is no fixed distribution of power. Power distribution is continuously adjusted to actual driving conditions. However, should any wheel slip, power is immediately transmitted to the wheels where it is needed.
