Family-Friendly Memorial Day 2018 Events in the Bronx and NYC
Memorial Day is just around the corner! We are looking forward to commemorating our fallen heroes and spending a little more time with our family. Being in New York, there is no shortage of events for you and your family to check out. Here are a few of our favorites:
The Bronx’s Memorial Day Parade
You don’t need to travel far to enjoy Memorial Day. Here in the Bronx, there is a fantastic Memorial Day Parade that remembers the sacrifices of our military. This year, the parade starts at 2pm on Monday, and the route takes place on City Island Avenue between Winter Street and Cross Street.
Memorial Day Commemoration at Green-Wood Cemetery
Over in Brooklyn at the Green-Wood Cemetery (located at 500 25th Street), there is a special commemoration event that includes live music from the ISO Symphonic Band. This year, there will be a selection of tunes to honor Leonard Bernstein, the composer who helped bring West Side Story to life (he is also buried in the cemetery). Food and beverages are available for purchase, but entry is free. The program starts at 2:30 on Monday.
Eat Some BBQ!
Barbeque is the quintessential Memorial Day meal – and you don’t need to travel to Memphis, Austin, or Kansas City to enjoy the good stuff! NYC has some really fabulous BBQ joints, with our favorites being Dallas BBQ (281 W Fordham Road, Bronx) and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (700 W 125th Street, New York).
Visit the Bronx Zoo!
If you are looking for a great way to spend some time with your kids (or if you are a huge fan of wildlife), we recommend adding the Bronx Zoo to your Memorial Day weekend itinerary. At the zoo, you can watch the antics of various species – including American Bison, Poison Dart Frogs, Grizzly Bears, Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, and more!
From all of us here at Teddy Volkswagen, Happy Memorial Day!
